I had flown up to Colorado years ago to photograph a mountain lion that a man owned and to see a girlfriend/artist. The man had neglected to tell me that the mountain lion hated women, so that was not going to
work out. He (the lion) spent his whole time at the end of his lead
(a chain, thank goodness) trying to bite me. And if you've ever seen
one really up close, they have VERY large teeth. The next day, we got up at 3am to drive up to where the rangers were feeding the big horned sheep so we could photograph them at dawn. On the way there in the pitch dark, we hit a patch of black ice and wrecked her truck. The people right behind us, slid on it also and flipped their truck (we were so lucky) and ended up in the hospital. So, it was obvious we were not supposed to be photographing any wildlife for reference material! Soooo, we did what any woman would do - WE WENT SHOPPING - in Telluride (before it was so famous)...and, (I AM getting to my story) this wonderful dog was in Telluride. There was no one in town and as we wandered, in the snow, from store to store, I looked across the street and saw this dog. He was sitting outside a restaurant with the snow coming down, totally engrossed in when his master would walk back out of that door. That was all he cared about...not the cold or the snow or any other people. His whole being was just waiting for the one person in his life that mattered. I knew then that I had not flown to Colorado to paint a mountain lion or a big horned sheep. I was there to paint a dog. This painting hopefully carries the feeling, without any words, of why we love dogs so very much...and they us. Lesley Harrison Home Page | Purchase This Print |
